Major Grocer Chain Partners with Ontario Cattle Feeders
Loblaws to Feature Ontario Corn Fed Beef

BRUSSELS – A lot more consumers can purchase an Ontario Brand of beef from their local grocer this summer. The Ontario Cattle Feeders’ Association (OCFA) and Loblaw Companies Limited have teamed up to market Ontario Corn Fed Beef in 120 grocery stores. Under the National Grocers banner, the Ontario Corn Fed signature beef brand will be featured in Value Mart and Your Independent Grocer stores throughout Ontario.

“Ontario Corn Fed Beef is a prime example of a program that can take this industry forward,” said Curtis Royal, a beef farmer from Simcoe County and OCFA President. “There’s a need for a high-end Brand program in this province that can deliver a quality, consistent product to the consumer.”

“This is a quantum leap forward for Ontario beef producers and the Ontario feedlot industry as a whole” said OCFA Executive Director Jim Clark. The Loblaw’s initiative was announced at the farm organization’s Summer BBQ on Wednesday, July 11th.

800 people were served a steak dinner in Brussels , featuring Ontario Corn Fed Beef.

The new agreement will see a large increase in the number of cattle processed for the Ontario Corn Fed Beef program. Currently, 500 Ontario Corn Fed-qualified cattle are

are processed weekly. That number will increase to as many as 1,200 weekly under the Loblaw’s initiative.

“There’s a great opportunity here and it’s up to the entire beef industry to make sure the commitment is met” said Clark . “We need to meet the needs of today’s society while satisfying our consumers’ requirements.” The Ontario Corn Fed Beef program was launched in June of 2001 to expand the market and the profile of Ontario produced beef.

Clark says this announcement should be good news for everyone “With conditions as tough as they are on family farms across Ontario right now, we firmly believe that our branded beef program can improve sustainability for cattle producers, who represent one of Ontario’s largest farm sectors.
